Raymond S. Doyon American Legion Post 69 is proud to introduce Shannon Ferguson our new Veteran Service Officer, she will serve as a dedicated advocate for all veterans, service members, and their families within our community. The VSO plays a vital role in fulfilling the American Legion’s mission of supporting those who have worn the uniform of our great nation.

With a commitment to professionalism, compassion, and confidentiality, Shannon is here to ensure no veteran navigates the complexities of benefits, claims, or support programs alone.

Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a serious asbestos-related cancer that can take decades to develop, which means many veterans and families may not realize their symptoms are connected to past military asbestos exposure. Many veterans were exposed to asbestos during military service through ships, bases, vehicles, buildings, and equipment.

Roughly 1 in 3 mesothelioma cases are linked to military asbestos exposure. Veterans and civilians on military bases face asbestos exposure risks when they handle or repair older buildings, equipment or asbestos products. Every military occupation carries some risk, but jobs with frequent or close contact to asbestos fibers carry much higher risks. These risks come from tasks like ship maintenance, construction, demolition and firefighting where asbestos products were widely used."

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Overview

Post traumatic Stress Disorder can occur following a life-threatening event like military combat, natural disasters, terrorist incidents, serious accidents, or violent personal assaults. Most survivors of trauma return to normal given a little time. However, some people have stress reactions that don't go away on their own, or may even get worse over time. These individuals may develop PTSD.

People who suffer from PTSD often suffer from nightmares, flashbacks, difficulty sleeping, and feeling emotionally numb. These symptoms can significantly impair a person's daily life.

 PTSD is marked by clear physical and psychological symptoms. It often has symptoms like depression, substance abuse, problems of memory and cognition, and other physical and mental health problems. The disorder is also associated with difficulties in social or family life, including occupational instability, marital problems, family discord, and difficulties in parenting.If you are suffering from PTSD, or know someone who is, the following list of resources and information will help you find help in dealing with PTSD and related conditions.
